Balloon, a Channel Frederator Featured Film

June 22nd, 2007

It may be quick, and it might be simple, but Liam Brazier’s “really short” Short, Balloon, is powerful in the Funny department. Enough so, that I actually “rewind” the podcast so I can watch it and LOL. I highly recommend perusing Liam’s site, www.liambrazier.com, and spending some quality time wading in the shallow end, and if you must insist on going to the deeper end (which I recommend) be sure to bring those floaties!
Thanks again Liam!

1. How did you come up with the idea for this film?
Ha! I think ‘idea’ maybe stretching it, but it was usual day-to-day wonderings involving crayons and telekinesis.. :)
In all seriousness it was created, very quickly, as part of a series of stings to promote my personal site. I am primarily an illustrator, as ‘Balloon’s image plus editorial copy stance no doubt reveals, and it did start as an image. I then heard the somewhat carnival-esque music (by friends Hot Silk Pockets) and the two just fitted I thought.

2. Who are some of your influences?
I very much identify with the scribbles of David Shrigley, Dr. Seuss, Tom Gauld and Simone Lia, etc. Edward Gorey is my Jesus. The wayward thinking and ultra high ideas per page quota found inJeff Noon’s ‘Pixel Juice’ continues to be my go-to book (I must have read that thing five times now).

3. What do you do when you get stuck creatively?
Surprisingly I do other things (he remarks, flippantly). It can get a little bit ‘tunnel vision’ sometimes when you’re knee deep in a project and it’s easy to forget that other things are actually still occurring, all by themselves, without your involvement - I try and rectify that a little. Other things fuel the creativity thankfully.

Sorry, that wasn’t particularly helpful at all was it.

4. Balloons vs. Balloon animals?
Balloon animals are trying very hard to impress aren’t they? Dunno what their problem is. Also; anything remotely connected to clowns should be disowned immediately. There is no argument there so don’t even try.

5. What are you working on currently?
I am one half of a little production house called Littlenobody and animation wise there are a few things on the go. I am coming to the end of a long slog on a hand drawn music vid that I’m itching to get out into the wild, and we’re in the preliminary stages of producing a series of animations based upon this child’s school text book, dated 1987, we discovered in the bottom of the box. The language inside is too perfect for words -plus; sarcastic teachers comments in red pen! Genius.

We recently completed a very Alice style ten-ish minute short too that includes everything from stop-motion to pixellation to some 3d After Effects things and that’s just gone out so will hopefully getting some festival action soon (all available limbs crossed!).
All in all it’s all go at the mo!

Very Cool Liam! Thanks for submitting to us, on behalf of all of Channel Fred. I’ll be keeping an eye (or 2) out for your future projects!

Seriously. If yr film or short is featured on CH.Fred, what better way to promote yrself than embedding the Fred on yr very own website, blog or myspace page? For the extreme Fredheads, there’s the ultimate “Always Fresh” embedding code.
What are you waiting for? All the cool kids are doing it. I have mine up on my Myspace Page now.
Don’t believe me? Take a look, and add me while yr at it!
Cheers!
